Exhibition: "Tutankhamun, The Treasury of Pharaoh" at the Grande Halle de la Villette - From 23 March to 22 September 2019
Categories : Exhibitions, published on : 6/13/23
50 years after his last stop in Paris, Tutankhamun returns for a monumental exhibition at the Grande Halle de la Villette, from March 23 to September 22, 2019.
1967.
More than 50 years since Tutankhamun (Toutânkhamon in French) had not return to Paris.
This latest exhibition, which remains in the annals, had attracted not less than 1.2 million visitors to the Grand Palais. A record.
It brought together 45 works, 25 of which will be back during Spring 2019.
This time, it moves to the Grande Halle de la Villette, a place large enough to accommodate 150 pieces, a third of which comes out of Egypt for the first time.
On November 4, 1922, the British archaeologist Howard Carter made an extraordinary discovery in the Valley of the Kings: the tomb of Tutankhamun, Pharaoh of the XVIIIth Egyptian Dynasty (our 14th century BC).
The exhibition Tutankhamun, The Treasury of Pharaoh is presented by the Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities, with the assistance of the Louvre Museum, which, for the occasion, will let some of his pieces visible only in Paris, such as the statue of the God Amun, cross the Seine.
After their stop in Los Angeles, the Egyptian pieces land in Europe, then will continue their tour in Canada, Japan and South Korea, before returning home in 2022, in a gigantic museum in Cairo, still under construction.
"Seeing these works in Paris is a chance that will not happen again" warns Dominique Farout, scientific adviser of the exhibition. "Myself, at the Cairo Museum, I saw these colossi and pharaohs huddled together, leaning against the walls, and never from behind. At la Villette, we will turn around, we will see them as never." he adds.
