Marilyn Monroe Honored at the Cinémathèque Française.
Celebrating the Star, Showcasing the Actress
“I can be smart when it matters, but most men don’t like that. ” The famous line from Howard Hawks’ *Gentlemen Prefer Blondes* (1953) could, in a sense, sum things up quite well: Marilyn Monroe faced the ruthless studio system during her short acting career in Hollywood (1946–1962) and remains today as much a subject of disdain as a performer as she is of adulation as a star. Given its scenographic possibilities, the exhibition is particularly well-suited to the visual opulence that Monroe epitomized in the 1950s. Her trajectory in the era of Technicolor and widescreen is illustrated by glamorous promotional material, her sexy wardrobe, portraits by renowned artists (Eve Arnold, Richard Avedon, Andy Warhol…), as well as news reports analyzing every decision made by the celebrity. Or news reports commenting on her death, which, at the age of 36, opened the spectacular chapter of “her life” posthumously. This legacy is celebrated in an installation inspired by ballroom culture—a trend Madonna, the embodiment of pop culture in her ability to appropriate trends and make them shine, popularized long before *Drag Race*.
