The Champs-Elysées and the Arc de Triomphe
Categories : Leisure, published on : 4/10/23
Want to discover what's known as the most beautiful avenue in the world?
Then head to the iconic Champs-Élysées, in the 8th arrondissement of Paris.
Created in 1616, it was landscaped in 1670 by André Le Nôtre, Louis XIV's gardener. Before that, the avenue was nothing but a marsh.
It took the name Champs-Élysées in 1709, in reference to the place in the Underworld where heroes and virtuous souls reside in Greek mythology.
Nearly 2 km long and 71 m wide, one of Paris's main tourist attractions connects the Place de la Concorde, where the Luxor Obelisk stands, to the monumental Arc de Triomphe.
Always bustling, this avenue is home to a wide variety of shops, from major retailers to luxury boutiques during the day.
In the evening, Parisian nightlife takes over with cinemas, theaters, nightclubs, cabarets, and restaurants such as the Lido and Le Fouquet’s.
The Champs-Élysées is also the gathering place for major events such as the Bastille Day parade on July 14th, the start of the Paris Marathon in April, the arrival of the Tour de France in July, and the Armistice Day commemoration ceremony every November 11th.
For the holiday season, the Champs-Élysées is ablaze with lights. On December 31st, it welcomes the New Year with a final countdown projected onto the Arc de Triomphe.
Did you know? Twice a year, the sun sets under the Arc de Triomphe. An unforgettable sight!
The construction of the Arc de Triomphe, commissioned by Emperor Napoleon I, began in 1806 and was completed in 1836 during the reign of Louis-Philippe.
It is located on the Place Charles-de-Gaulle (formerly the Place de l'Étoile), a vast roundabout connecting 12 avenues that radiate outwards from the square.
Open year-round except during special events, explore the interior rooms of the Arc de Triomphe and its history before concluding your visit with a breathtaking panoramic view from the rooftop.
A must-see during your stay at the Hotel Le Jardin Le Bréa, all you have to do is stroll "along the avenue, with your heart open to the unknown...".
